By Gary, Greenlight My App · Updated Oct 31, 2026 · Last checked Oct 31, 2026, 7:20–7:40 AM ET · How we checked this: we read chatgpt.com/pricing, OpenAI's Help Center articles on Pro tiers and Business billing, OpenAI's API pricing page and its API credits guide, all logged out from a US connection, and saved screenshots. We didn't buy any plan or test any plan's usage limits. Drafted with AI tools and reviewed by a person before publishing.
This guide is for two kinds of readers: people choosing a ChatGPT plan, and builders who also need to know what the OpenAI API will cost once their app goes live. The second part is where most pricing pages stop short.

OpenAI's own summary, from the pricing page FAQ: "The free version of ChatGPT is available to everyone. Paid plans (Go, Plus, Business, and Enterprise) are priced per user per month. We offer monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise."

What do you get on ChatGPT Free and Go?
Free gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-6 plus limited uploads, images, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. Go, at $8 a month, adds more messages with tools, more uploads, images and voice chats, and longer memory. OpenAI notes that Go may include ads.
From the plan cards on chatgpt.com/pricing (checked Oct 31, 2026):
| Feature | Free | Go ($8) |
|---|---|---|
| Text chats | "Unlimited text chats with GPT-6" | Everything in Free |
| Uploads, images, voice | Limited | More |
| Memory and context | Limited | Longer memory |
| GPT Instant total context window | 27K | 54K |
| Ads | n/a | "This plan may include ads." |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
"Unlimited" has a footnote on OpenAI's page: "Unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails."
How much is ChatGPT Plus, and is it worth it?
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Over Go it adds advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded messages, uploads, deep research and memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage and early access to new features. Whether it's worth it depends on whether you keep hitting Free or Go limits.
A simple way to decide:
- You hit limits on Free or Go most weeks and use reasoning, deep research or Codex: Plus is the next step.
- You mostly chat and rarely upload files: Go or Free may cover you.
- You're building an app on the API: Plus doesn't pay for API calls. Budget the API separately (see below).
Plus and Go both list a 54K GPT Instant context window and a 256K reasoning context window on the comparison table. The Help Center's Pro article also says that in the Oct 29 change, "Plus usage is unchanged."
ChatGPT Pro price: $100, $200 or $500?
ChatGPT Pro has three tiers: Pro 100 at $100 a month, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. Higher tiers include more usage, and only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast. Each tier also comes with monthly API credits equal to its price. Pro is billed monthly only.

| Tier | Monthly price | Ultrafast | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 | Not included | $100 |
| Pro 200 | $200 | Not included | $200 |
| Pro 500 | $500 | Included | $500 |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
Sources: About ChatGPT Pro tiers (external) and API credits for ChatGPT subscribers (external), checked Oct 31, 2026. OpenAI's Help Center adds: "Pro is billed monthly. Annual billing and payment for multiple months in advance are not available."
Pro's plan card lists "Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra", longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, Dot ("your always-on agent"), and maximum deep research, memory and context. The comparison table lists a 128K GPT Instant context window and a 400K reasoning context window for Pro.
What changed for Pro on Oct 29, 2026?
On Oct 29, OpenAI reversed a planned usage cut. BleepingComputer quoted OpenAI's Tibo: "We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today." OpenAI's Help Center now says the Pro 200 "reduction announced in our September 29 email is canceled", that Pro 100 and Pro 500 "now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance", and that Pro 200's lower allowance doubled to match the higher one. The Pro 200 price "stays at $200/month."
In short: more usage, same prices. OpenAI also says "A larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks."
ChatGPT Business and Enterprise pricing
ChatGPT Business (formerly ChatGPT Team) has two seat types. Standard costs $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually. Premium costs $125, or $100 billed annually, with 5x Standard's usage and no five-hour usage limit. You need at least 2 seats and can have up to 200. Enterprise is custom pricing.

| Seat | Billed monthly | Billed annually (per month) | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Standard | $25 / user | $20 / user | $20 per paid seat |
| Business Premium | $125 / user | $100 / user | $100 per paid seat |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Not eligible |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
Business API credits are "pooled and capped at $500 per workspace per month", per OpenAI's API credits guide. The Help Center also confirms "ChatGPT Team was renamed to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025."
Worked example: a 5-person team
| Setup | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Standard seats | 5 × $25 = $125 | 5 × $20 = $100 |
| 4 Standard + 1 Premium | 4 × $25 + $125 = $225 | 4 × $20 + $100 = $180 |
| 5 Premium seats | 5 × $125 = $625 | 5 × $100 = $500 |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
Annual billing saves $60 per Standard seat per year ($300 versus $240) and $300 per Premium seat ($1,500 versus $1,200). Nonprofits can get "up to a 75% discount on ChatGPT Business or ChatGPT Enterprise", and OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Teachers free to verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027, per the pricing page FAQ.
ChatGPT Plus vs Pro vs Business: which plan fits?
Plus fits one person who wants reasoning models and more usage. Pro fits one person who works in ChatGPT, Codex or Work most of the day. Business fits teams that need a shared workspace, admin controls, SSO and no training on business data by default.
| Plus | Pro | Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 / month | $100 to $500 / month | $20 to $125 / user / month |
| Users | One person | One person | 2 to 200 |
| Billing | Monthly | Monthly only | Monthly or annual |
| Reasoning context window | 256K | 400K | 256K |
| Training on your data | Opt-out available | Opt-out available | No training on business data by default |
| Included API credits | None | $100 to $500 | $20 or $100 per seat, up to $500 per workspace |

How much does the OpenAI API cost (ChatGPT for builders)?
The OpenAI API is billed per million tokens, separately from any ChatGPT plan. On Oct 31, 2026, Standard pricing per 1M tokens (short context) ran from $0.10 input and $0.50 output for gpt-6-luna to $10 input and $50 output for gpt-6-astra. A ChatGPT subscription doesn't cover your app's API calls, apart from included credits.

| Model | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens | Cached input |
|---|---|---|---|
| gpt-6-astra | $10.00 | $50.00 | $1.00 |
| gpt-6.1-sol | $2.00 | $10.00 | $0.10 |
| gpt-6.1-terra | $1.00 | $5.00 | $0.05 |
| gpt-6-luna | $0.10 | $0.50 | $0.01 |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
Source: OpenAI API pricing (external), Standard speed, short context, checked Oct 31, 2026. Fast, Flex/Batch and long-context prices differ. The page also notes that regional processing endpoints carry a 10% uplift for models released on or after March 5, 2026.
Worked example: 1,000 chats a day
Say your app handles 1,000 requests a day, each with about 1,500 input tokens and 500 output tokens. That's 1.5M input and 0.5M output tokens a day.
| Model | Daily cost | About 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| gpt-6-luna | 1.5 × $0.10 + 0.5 × $0.50 = $0.40 | $12 |
| gpt-6.1-sol | 1.5 × $2.00 + 0.5 × $10.00 = $8.00 | $240 |
| gpt-6-astra | 1.5 × $10.00 + 0.5 × $50.00 = $40.00 | $1,200 |
Prices as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
This ignores caching, which can lower input cost, and taxes. It's arithmetic on the list prices, not a measured bill.
Do Pro and Business API credits cover my app?
Partly. Pro tiers include $100, $200 or $500 a month in API credits, and Business includes $20 per Standard seat or $100 per Premium seat, up to $500 per workspace. OpenAI's guide says unused credits "expire at the end of the billing cycle and don't roll over", and "Codex usage through API keys is not supported by this benefit." When free and purchased credits run out, "API requests fail with HTTP 429 and error code credit_balance_exhausted."

For Claude's per-token prices side by side, see our Claude API pricing guide.
How do I keep my OpenAI API bill from surprising me?
Keep your API key on your server, never in browser code, set spend limits on your API project, and watch the usage dashboard. A key copied into public JavaScript can be found and used by anyone, and every request they make is billed to you.
Practical steps:
- Create the key in a project with a spend limit. Our how to get an OpenAI API key guide walks through it.
- Call the API from your backend only. If you're not sure why, read what is an API key.
- Rate-limit your own endpoint so one user or bot can't run up your bill.
- Rotate the key at once if it leaks. See what to do if your AI API key was stolen.
Greenlight My App's scan looks for secret key patterns, including OpenAI keys, in your live site's public JavaScript, and checks for exposed files like /.env and /.git.
