Cursor vs Claude Code comes down to where you want to work. Cursor is an AI code editor: you write code in it, and its agent edits alongside you. Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent: you give it a task in your terminal, an IDE extension, a desktop app or the browser, and it works through your repo. Cursor has a $0 plan and paid plans from $8 a month; Claude Code is included with Claude Pro at $20 a month and higher plans.

By Gary, Greenlight My App 路 Compared on Oct 21, 2026; based on Cursor's and Anthropic's public sites 路 Drafted with AI tools and reviewed before publishing. We don't rank vendors and aren't affiliated with either.

Plenty of people who build apps with AI use one of these every day, and some use both. This guide compares what each vendor publishes: plans, prices, how the agent is allowed to act by default, and how to keep secrets like your .env file out of reach.

Is Cursor an IDE and Claude Code a terminal agent?

Mostly, yes. Cursor is an editor: you open your project in it, type code, and ask its agent for help in the same window. Claude Code started in the terminal and now also runs in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and the browser (docs (external)). If you like to watch every line change as you type, Cursor fits. If you'd rather describe a task and review the result, Claude Code fits.

Prices as of Oct 21, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them: Cursor pricing (external) 路 Claude pricing (external).

Two pricing details matter:

  • Cursor: "Third Party model usage in Cursor is not included in the monthly prices shown and must be purchased separately." Its usage pool refreshes weekly and is shared with Grok features on the same plan.
  • Claude Code: it shares one usage pool with your Claude chats, with limits on a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits. Our Claude Code pricing post has worked examples.

Which is cheaper? For light use, Cursor's Free and $8 plans cost less than Claude Pro. At the main tier, Claude Pro is $20 and Cursor Premium is $30, but they include different things, so compare by what you'd actually use.

Same app, both tools: how to test fairly

  1. Write one prompt for a small app you actually need, such as a login page and one data table.
  2. Run it in both tools on comparable paid plans, in fresh copies of the same repo.
  3. Read the diff. Look for secret keys in frontend code, disabled database rules and committed .env files.
  4. Check production settings: source maps off and .env not served.
  5. Deploy to test URLs and scan both before you decide.

Permissions and safety: rules, approvals and .env files

Both tools ask before running terminal commands by default. They differ on file edits.

  • Cursor: per its agent security docs (external), "Agents can modify workspace files without approval, except for configuration files. Changes save immediately to disk." Reading files doesn't need approval, so use .cursorignore to block access to files like .env. Terminal commands need approval unless you configure Run Modes, which Cursor calls "best-effort guardrails rather than a hard security boundary." By default, its tools only make network requests to GitHub, direct link retrieval and web search providers.
  • Claude Code: per its permissions docs (external), the default (Manual) mode asks before file edits and most shell commands. To keep it away from secrets, add a deny rule such as Read(./.env). The docs note rules "are enforced by Claude Code, not by the model," and recommend the sandbox for OS-level enforcement. bypassPermissions skips prompts and is meant "only" for isolated environments like containers or VMs.

Either way, use version control so you can undo an agent's changes, and learn what a .env file is and why it should never be public. Our Claude Code permissions guide has a starter settings file.

How do Cursor and Claude Code handle your code and data?

Both let you limit how your code is used, but you have to turn the settings on. Cursor says that when Privacy Mode is enabled, in settings or by a team admin, "code data is not used for training by us or our model providers." Cursor also supports workspace trust, but it's off by default; you turn it on with "security.workspace.trust.enabled": true in your user settings. On the Claude side, Anthropic's plan table lists model training as "Opt-out" on Free, Pro and Max, and "None by default" on Team and Enterprise. Claude Code also asks you to trust a folder before it applies that project's allow rules. If you open repos you didn't write, turn on these protections first and check the settings on your own account.

Can you use Cursor and Claude Code together?

Yes. You can edit in Cursor and hand bigger tasks to Claude Code in Cursor's built-in terminal. Claude Code's VS Code extension is another route. Just keep one tool editing a given file at a time, commit before each agent task, and check the permission settings in both.
