Claude Pro vs Max, in one line: Pro costs $20 a month and gives you the baseline paid usage. Max costs $100 a month and gives you 5x Pro's usage in every 5-hour window and every week. Claude Max now has a bigger sibling too: Anthropic says the old Max 20x plan is now called Ultra, at $200 a month. All three include Claude Code and Opus, and all three share one usage pool between chat and coding.

Claude Pro vs Max: the short answer
Pick Pro if you use Claude for a few focused sessions a day and rarely see the limit message. Pick Max if you hit the 5-hour limit most days, or you run Claude Code for hours. Pick Ultra only if Max still runs out before the week ends. If you're building an app, none of these plans is the thing your app should use; that's the Claude API.

What do you get with Claude Pro?
Claude Pro is Anthropic's entry paid plan: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on the annual plan, which is billed as $200 up front. It adds Claude Code, Opus models, Research, Projects and Claude in Chrome on top of the Free plan, with "More usage than Free, every 5 hours and every week."
The pricing page's FAQ describes it this way: "The Pro plan gives you everything in a Free plan with more usage and more of Claude's capabilities. That includes Claude Code, along with projects to organize your chats and documents, access to more Claude models, and Claude for Microsoft 365."
How much more usage than Free? The same FAQ says: "Pro gives you at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free." If you're still deciding whether to pay at all, our guide to whether Claude is free covers the Free plan in detail.
Worked example: monthly vs annual Pro. Monthly Pro is $20 × 12 = $240 a year. Annual Pro is $200 up front. Paying yearly saves $40, but you commit for 12 months. Max and Ultra don't offer an annual option on the current page.
What is Claude Max? (and what happened to Max 20x)
Claude Max is the $100-a-month plan "For all-day work." Its headline benefit is "5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week," plus "$100 a month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform," early access to new features and priority access at busy times. It's billed monthly only.
Anthropic's help article on the Max plan says Max subscribers get "five times the Pro plan's usage every five hours and every week" and that "The Max plan is available for $100 per month." It adds that this is the web price: "Mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform."

Claude Max 5x vs 20x: is there still a 20x plan?
Not under that name. Older guides compare "Max 5x" and "Max 20x." Anthropic's Ultra help article now says: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change."
So in November 2026 the lineup is Pro, Max (the old 5x tier) and Ultra (the old 20x tier). Ultra is $200 a month and, per the same article, "includes 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week and has no five-hour limit, for verified accounts."
Note the difference: the old name promised 20x, while Ultra is described as 10x Pro's weekly usage with no 5-hour window. We're quoting Anthropic's current wording; we can't tell you how the old 20x figure was measured.
What is a verified Ultra account?
Anthropic says it verifies Ultra accounts automatically "using factors like your account and payment history." Until then, "a temporary limit applies." The help article also says: "Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn't remove this limit." To check, open Settings > Usage: "If you don't see a Current session bar, your account is verified."
Claude usage limits explained (session limit, weekly limit)
Paid Claude plans have two limits that run at the same time: a session limit that resets five hours after your first message, and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. Both shrink faster with long chats, big files, heavier models and Claude Code.
Anthropic's usage article puts it plainly: "Paid plans have two types of usage limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and weekly limits that reset once every week."
- The 5-hour limit. "The period starts when you send your first message, and your limit resets in full five hours later."
- The weekly limit. "Weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account." You can see the next reset in Settings > Usage.
- Max has an extra Fable limit. The Max article says Max plans have "a five-hour limit, a weekly usage limit that applies across all models, and a separate weekly limit for Fable."

Why isn't there a message count?
Because usage depends on what you do. The pricing FAQ says: "How much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use, so there's no fixed message count." Any article that promises "X messages per day" on Pro or Max is guessing.
What happens when you hit the Claude limit?
You have three choices, per Anthropic: "you can wait for it to reset, move to a higher plan, or, on paid plans, turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates." Usage credits are pay-as-you-go, so set a spending cap you're comfortable with before turning them on.
Anthropic also reserves the right to add other limits: "we may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."
Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code
Claude Code works on Pro, Max and Ultra, and it uses the same pool as your chats. If you code with Claude for an hour or two a day, Pro is usually enough to start. If Claude Code runs most of your working day, Max's 5x limit is the plan built for that.
The pricing page FAQ says: "Claude Code is included in all paid plans. It shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan, so your work in the terminal and your chats draw from one pool." Anthropic's usage article says the same: "your usage of all different Claude product surfaces (claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Desktop) counts towards the same usage limit."
That has a practical side effect. A long Claude Code session in the morning can leave you rate-limited in the chat app at lunch. If that keeps happening, that's the sign to move up.
The FAQ also mentions a third route: "For heavy coding sessions, you can also switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account." Our Claude Code pricing guide compares subscription and API billing in detail, and how to install Claude Code walks through setup. If you're wondering whether you can use it without paying, see is Claude Code free.
Is Claude Max worth it? (who should upgrade)
Claude Max is worth it when you regularly lose working time to the 5-hour limit on Pro. It costs 5x as much as monthly Pro for 5x the usage, so the price per unit of usage is the same; you're paying to not wait. If you rarely hit Pro's limit, Max buys you nothing.
| You are... | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chatting a few times a day, writing, research | Pro | Baseline usage is enough; annual billing saves $40 a year |
| Coding with Claude Code 1 to 2 hours a day | Pro | Same pool as chat; upgrade only if you hit the 5-hour limit |
| Hitting the 5-hour limit most workdays | Max | 5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week |
| Running Claude Code most of the day, every day | Max, then Ultra | Ultra drops the 5-hour limit for verified accounts |
| Building an app that calls Claude | API key (Console) | Apps should use the API, billed per token, not a personal plan |
| A team of 2 or more | Team plan | Shared billing and admin controls; see the pricing page |
Prices as of Nov 2, 2026. Check the official page before you rely on them.
Worked example: when Max pays off. Say you hit Pro's 5-hour limit three days a week and lose about an hour waiting each time. That's roughly 12 hours a month. Max costs $80 more than monthly Pro. If an hour of your time is worth more than about $6.67 to you ($80 ÷ 12), Max pays for itself. If you hit the limit once a month, it doesn't.
Max also includes "$100 a month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform." If you'd already be spending that on the API for a side project, that changes the math in Max's favor. Check Anthropic's credits article for how and when those credits apply before counting on them.
Subscription vs API key: which is cheaper for builders, and which is safe in an app?
For your own work, a flat subscription is usually simpler and easier to budget. For an app with users, use the Claude API with a key that lives only on your server. A subscription is tied to your personal account; an app needs its own credential, its own spending limit and its own logs.
Here's the difference in practice:
| Subscription (Pro, Max, Ultra) | Claude API key (Console) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | You, in Claude apps and Claude Code | Your code |
| Billing | Flat monthly price, with usage limits | Per token used |
| Good for | Daily personal work and coding | Apps, scripts, production features |
| Where it lives | Your logged-in account | A server-side environment variable |
| If it leaks | Someone acts as you | Someone runs up your bill |

A common mistake in AI-built apps isn't the plan choice; it's where the key ends up. If an AI tool put a fetch to the Claude API inside a React component, the key ships to every visitor's browser. Move the call into a server route and read the key from an environment variable. First, the key goes in .env.local, which stays on the server and is never committed:
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-XXXXThen the call goes in a server route such as app/api/ask/route.ts, so the key never reaches the browser:
const res = await fetch("https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"x-api-key": process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY ?? "",
"anthropic-version": "2023-06-01",
"content-type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({ model: "YOUR_MODEL_ID", max_tokens: 256, messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Hello" }] }),
});Set a monthly spending limit in the Console, and never paste a key into a chat, a screenshot or a public repo. For the full checklist, read our Claude API key security guide. For per-token prices, see Claude API pricing.
How to check your Claude usage
Open Claude, go to Settings > Usage. Anthropic's help pages point there for everything: how much of the current 5-hour session you've used, how long until it resets, and when your weekly limit resets. On Ultra, a missing "Current session" bar means your account is verified and has no 5-hour limit.
Three habits that stretch any plan, all from Anthropic's own usage guidance:
- Start a new chat for a new task. Anthropic notes that long conversations that trigger automatic context management "consume more of your usage limit."
- Turn off tools you don't need. The usage article says: "Tools and connectors are token-intensive."
- Lower the effort level for routine work. "Higher effort uses more tokens."
FAQ
Is there a difference between Claude and Claude Pro? Yes. Claude is the app and model family; Pro is a $20-a-month paid plan. Pro adds Claude Code, Opus and Research, and at least 5x Free's usage per 5-hour session.
How much is Claude Pro? $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on the annual plan, billed as $200 up front (checked Nov 2, 2026). Prices exclude tax and can change.
How much is Claude Max? $100 a month on the web, billed monthly only. Ultra, the renamed Max 20x plan, is $200 a month. Mobile app prices may differ.
Why is Claude Pro so limited? Every plan has a 5-hour and a weekly limit. Long chats, big files, heavier models and Claude Code all use more. Anthropic says there's no fixed message count.
How much do Claude Code credits cost? Claude Code is included in Pro, Max and Ultra. Past your limit, paid plans can turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates, or you can use API credits via a Console account.
Do Pro and Max share limits with Claude Code? Yes. Anthropic says Claude Code "shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan," so terminal work and chats draw from one pool.
Can I use my Claude subscription in my app? Don't. A plan is tied to your personal login. Apps should call the Claude API with a key kept in a server-side environment variable, with a spending limit set.
What is the price of Claude 20x Max in India? The 20x plan is now Ultra, $200 a month on the web in US dollars. Anthropic doesn't list local prices on that page, so check claude.com/pricing from your country.
Is Claude Max worth it? Only if you often hit Pro's 5-hour limit. Max costs 5x monthly Pro for 5x the usage, so you pay to wait less, not for a better model.
