Is Claude Code free? No. Claude Code isn't included on Anthropic's Free plan. You need a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or API credits. Installing it costs nothing, but it won't do work until you sign in with a paid plan or an API key. Checked on claude.com/pricing (external), Oct 30, 2026.
By Gary, Greenlight My App 路 Updated Oct 30, 2026 路 How we checked this: on Oct 30, 2026 we installed Claude Code 2.1.314 from Anthropic's official npm package in a throwaway folder on a Linux test machine (6:50 AM ET), ran it without signing in, and captured Anthropic's pricing page at 6:54 AM ET and the official setup docs. We also built a small demo app with a fake API key and scanned it with the Greenlight My App scanner. I read Check Point's own write-up on fake Claude and ChatGPT apps. We did not test Claude Code's coding features, because we don't have a paid sign-in for it. Drafted with AI tools and reviewed by a person before publishing.
I get this question a lot from people shipping their first AI-built app: "Can I just use Claude Code for free?" The honest answer is short, and the risky part is what people do after they hear "no".

Is Claude Code free? The short answer
No. On Oct 30, 2026 (captured 6:54 AM ET), Anthropic's pricing page listed Claude Code as not included on the Free plan, and included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. The pricing FAQ says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans" and that it shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan.

Anthropic's pricing FAQ, Oct 30, 2026, 6:54 AM ET.
Here's the plan-by-plan view, taken only from Anthropic's own pages on the date above:
| Plan | Claude Code included? | How it's billed (official page, Oct 30, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | No | $0. Chat on web, desktop and mobile only |
| Pro | Yes | Monthly or annual subscription |
| Max (5x or 20x) | Yes | Monthly subscription, more usage than Pro |
| Team | Yes | Per seat, monthly or annual |
| Enterprise | Yes | Per seat plus usage at API rates, annual |
| Console (API) account | Yes, per the setup docs | Pay as you go for tokens used |
For exact prices and worked cost examples, see our Claude Code pricing guide. I'm not repeating the math here so the two pages don't drift apart.
What the Free Claude plan includes, and what it doesn't
Claude Free gives you Claude chat on web, desktop and mobile, plus things like web search, file creation, Artifacts, memory and connectors. It doesn't include Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome or the Opus models, according to the plan comparison table on Oct 30, 2026.
So "claude code free" isn't a setting you can find. If you're on Free, you can still paste code into a chat and ask questions about it. What you don't get is the agent that works inside your terminal and your project files.
| Free plan, Oct 30, 2026 | Included? |
|---|---|
| Chat on web, iOS, Android and desktop | Yes |
| Create and edit files with code execution | Yes |
| Web search, Artifacts, memory, connectors | Yes |
| Projects | Up to 5 |
| Claude Code | No |
| Claude in Chrome | No |
| Opus models | No (Sonnet and Haiku are listed) |
What are the cheapest real ways to use Claude Code?
The lowest-priced individual plan that includes Claude Code is Pro. Heavier users can pick Max. Teams can use Team or Enterprise seats. Or you can skip a plan and pay for API usage through a Console account. Which is cheapest depends on how much you use it.
- Pro. The entry plan that includes Claude Code. Anthropic lists monthly and annual billing.
- Max. For people who hit Pro limits. Anthropic says it gives 5x or 20x the usage of Pro per 5-hour session.
- API pay-as-you-go. The pricing FAQ says that for heavy coding sessions "you can also switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account."
- Usage credits. On paid plans, when you hit a limit you can turn on usage credits "to keep working at standard API rates."
- Team or Enterprise seats. For companies that want central billing and admin controls.
We didn't find a student or education offer for Claude Code on the official pricing page on Oct 30, 2026, so we're not listing one. Full prices and "which plan for which workload" math live in Claude Code pricing. For raw token rates, see Claude API pricing.
Can you install Claude Code for free?
Yes. Downloading and installing Claude Code from Anthropic's official installer costs nothing. But Anthropic's docs say it "requires a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account" and that "the free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access." Until you sign in, it can't do any work.
The official install command for macOS, Linux and WSL, from Anthropic's setup docs (external):
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
claude --versionThe docs also list Homebrew (brew install --cask claude-code), WinGet (winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode), signed apt/dnf/apk repositories, and npm (npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code).
After install, running claude asks you to log in. The docs say that if you've set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and approve it, Claude Code skips the login prompt.
We tested it: install without signing in
On Oct 30, 2026 at 6:50 AM ET we installed Claude Code from Anthropic's official npm package into a throwaway folder, with an empty home folder and no API key set. claude --version printed 2.1.314 (Claude Code).

Our install, Oct 30, 2026, 6:50 AM ET.
Running claude showed "Welcome to Claude Code v2.1.314", then a login screen: "Claude Code can be used with your Claude subscription or billed based on API usage through your Console account." The three choices were a Claude account with subscription (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), an Anthropic Console account (API usage billing), or a third-party platform (Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, Google Vertex AI). There was no free option. We stopped there and didn't sign in.

Is there a Claude Code trial?
No Claude Code trial was listed on Anthropic's pricing page when we captured it on Oct 30, 2026 at 6:54 AM ET. The only "Trials" row we saw (re-checked at 7:01 AM ET) was in the plan comparison for sales-assisted Enterprise. If Anthropic adds a trial, the pricing page is where it would show up, so check there before you trust anyone else's offer.
Be careful with sites that promise a "Claude Code trial" or "free Claude Code key". They aren't Anthropic, and some of them are exactly the trap described in the next section.
"Free Claude Code" downloads and proxies: what are the risks?
The two big risks are fake installers and third-party proxies. Fake installers can carry malware. Proxies and routers send your prompts, your code and sometimes your keys through someone else's server. Neither is Anthropic, and you can't see what happens to your data there.
Fake Claude apps in search results
On Oct 27, 2026, Check Point Research published a write-up on a campaign it tracks as Yoba (external). Key points from Check Point's own report:
- Attackers made fake GitHub projects posing as desktop apps for ChatGPT and Claude, including one called "Claude Opus".
- Check Point says the projects showed up among top Google results, most likely through SEO poisoning.
- The ZIP downloads paired a real, signed Anthropic or OpenAI executable with a malicious DLL that the real program loads (DLL sideloading).
- Check Point found that the final payload in this campaign was a cryptocurrency miner (Check Point Research (external)).
- Check Point notes its research does not indicate that Claude, ChatGPT, OpenAI or Anthropic were compromised. The attackers abused the brands' trust.
The lesson for anyone searching "free Claude Code": a real signature on one file doesn't make the whole download safe. Install only with the commands in Anthropic's docs. The Hacker News (external) also covered the report on Oct 29.
Proxies and routers that promise free usage
Some guides show how to point Claude Code at a third-party proxy or "router" that forwards requests to other model providers for free or cheap. We won't name or link any of them. Here's why we treat the whole category as a risk:
- Your code leaves your machine for a server you don't control. Every prompt, file snippet and error message passes through it.
- Your keys may pass through it too. If you paste a provider key into a proxy, its operator can read or log it.
- You lose the official terms. Anthropic's data and training settings apply to Anthropic's service, not to a middleman.
- You can't verify what model actually answered.
| "Free" option you'll see | What it really is | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| "Claude desktop app" ZIP on GitHub | Not from Anthropic's docs | Malware (Check Point, Oct 27, 2026) |
| "Free Claude Code key" sites | Not Anthropic | Stolen or fake keys, phishing |
| Proxy or router setup guides | A third-party server in the middle | Code and keys leave your control |
| Official installer + paid plan | Anthropic | You pay for usage |
How do you check you installed the real Claude Code?
Install from the commands on code.claude.com, then run claude --version and claude doctor. Anthropic's docs say a working install prints a version number, and that claude doctor prints read-only install and settings checks. For extra assurance, the docs explain how to verify signed release manifests.
- Use the official docs domain. The setup page lives at
code.claude.com/docs. The installer comes fromclaude.ai/install.sh(or.ps1/.cmdon Windows). - Check the version.
claude --versionprints something like2.1.211 (Claude Code)per the docs. - Run
claude doctor. It reports install health and warnings without starting a session. - On macOS or Windows, check the signature. The docs say macOS binaries are signed by "Anthropic PBC" and Windows binaries by "Anthropic, PBC".
- Verify the manifest (advanced). Anthropic publishes a GPG-signed
manifest.jsonwith SHA256 checksums for each release from 2.1.89 onward.

Using an API key instead? Keep it out of your frontend
If you use Claude through an API key, that key is billed to your account. Never put it in frontend code. In a Vite app, any variable starting with VITE_ is built into the JavaScript your visitors download, so anyone can copy the key and spend your credits.
A common mistake looks like this (fake key, placeholder only):
// .env (DON'T do this)
VITE_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-XXXXThe fix is to call the API from a server function and keep the key in a server-only variable:
// .env (server only, no VITE_ prefix)
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-XXXXYour frontend then calls your own endpoint, and only the server talks to Anthropic. If a key ever shipped in a bundle, rotate it. See Claude API key security and what to do if your AI API key is stolen.
We tested it: a fake key in a Vite bundle
We built a small Vite demo with a fake key (sk-ant- followed by X's) in VITE_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. After the build, the fake key was sitting in the public JavaScript file.

Fake placeholder key, local demo, Oct 30, 2026.
We scanned the demo locally with the Greenlight My App scanner (main branch, commit 5142e47). Result: FAIL, "Anthropic API key is visible in your public code."

Local scan before the fix, Oct 30, 2026, 6:52 AM ET. Cropped to the relevant result.
We moved the call to a server route that reads the key from a server-only variable, rebuilt, and scanned again. Result: PASS, "No secret keys found in your public code."

The fix: the browser calls our own route; only the server holds the key.

Local rescan after the fix, Oct 30, 2026.
Are there free alternatives worth knowing?
The official free option from Anthropic is the Claude Free chat plan: you can paste code into a chat and ask for help, and it can create and run code in files. It isn't Claude Code. We haven't tested other vendors' free tiers, so we're not ranking them here.
If you're comparing coding agents, our Codex vs Claude Code post covers the differences. Whatever you pick, get it from the vendor's own site.
FAQ
Is Claude Code free? No. On Oct 30, 2026, Anthropic's pricing page listed Claude Code as not included on the Free plan. It's included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and you can also use it with a Console (API) account billed for usage. Installing the program itself costs nothing.
Can you use Claude Code on the Free plan? No. Anthropic's setup docs say "the free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access." You can install it, but you need a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account before it will work. The Free plan gives you Claude chat only.
Is there a Claude Code trial? We didn't see one. On Oct 30, 2026, Anthropic's pricing page listed no Claude Code trial; the only trials row (re-checked at 7:01 AM ET on Oct 30, 2026) was for sales-assisted Enterprise. Treat third-party "trial" offers with suspicion and check claude.com/pricing for anything new.
Is Claude Code free with an API key? No. Using an API key means pay-as-you-go billing through a Console account. You pay for the tokens Claude Code uses. Keep that key on your machine or a server, never in frontend code, because anyone who copies it can spend your credits.
Is it safe to download "free Claude Code"?
Not from unofficial sources. Check Point reported fake Claude and ChatGPT desktop apps on GitHub that ranked in Google and delivered malware. Only install with the commands in Anthropic's docs at code.claude.com, then verify with claude --version and claude doctor.
Can I write code with Claude for free? Partly. The Claude Free plan lets you chat about code, and the plan table lists file creation with code execution on Free. What Free doesn't include is Claude Code, the agent that works in your terminal and project. For that you need a paid plan or API credits.
Is Claude safe to use? Using the official apps and installer is the safe starting point. The bigger risks we see come from fake downloads, third-party proxies and leaked API keys. No tool is risk-free, so keep keys out of your frontend and review what any AI agent changes before you ship.
How do I check I installed the real Claude Code?
Install only with the commands on code.claude.com. Then run claude --version, which should print a version number, and claude doctor for install checks. Advanced users can verify Anthropic's GPG-signed release manifest and the binary's SHA256 checksum.
What we tested and what we didn't
We read Anthropic's pricing page (6:54 AM ET), the Claude Code setup docs and Check Point's report on Oct 30, 2026. We installed Claude Code 2.1.314 from the official npm package and ran it without signing in (it asked for a paid plan, a Console account or a cloud provider, and claude -p printed "Not logged in 路 Please run /login"). We scanned a local demo with a fake key using the Greenlight My App scanner at commit 5142e47: FAIL before the fix, PASS after. We did not test Claude Code's coding features, because we don't have a paid sign-in. We did not install or run any third-party proxy, router or "free" desktop app.
