Developing story, updated Oct 29, 2026, 6:45 PM ET. Everything below is as reported by the sources linked at the bottom. Nothing here is confirmed by us, and Binance has not published a final account of what happened.

Was Binance hacked?

Not confirmed by Binance. CoinDesk's headline reads "Binance loses $5.7 billion in largest crypto hack to date" (CoinDesk (external)), and CZ said it "does look like a hack." Binance itself said: "At this stage, we have not confirmed any impact to user funds." Binance has not confirmed a breach, a loss amount or a cause, and Decrypt notes that how the required signature was obtained is still unknown (Decrypt (external)).

What's reported

  • The outflows. On-chain analytics account TreeAI reportedly flagged large transfers out of Binance-linked hot wallets to freshly created addresses, across five blockchains and more than 60 tokens (Crypto Briefing (external)). Early reports put the total at about $2.5 billion to $2.77 billion.
  • The later tallies. Updated on-chain data put the outflows at $5.57 billion across three chains: $3.51B on Ethereum, $1.44B in Bitcoin and $630M on Tron (Crypto Briefing (external)). Decrypt reports the same $5.57B tally (Decrypt (external)).
  • The destination. CoinDesk reported that online sleuths were tracking the draining of a Binance wallet into a new externally owned account that now holds more than $5.7 billion in crypto, according to Arkham, including about $1.5B of bitcoin, $900M of ether and roughly $1.4B in USDT and USDC combined. CoinDesk also reports that the wallet's controller, which it calls the exploiter, borrowed 20,000 wrapped ETH (roughly $44 million) on Aave using USDT as collateral (CoinDesk (external)).
  • The cited transaction. Koin B眉lteni reported that the initial alert shared this transaction ID: 0x53bd38b8鈥88e2f3 (external). We link it as cited; we have not verified who controls the receiving address.
  • Tornado Cash. Security researchers flagged a potentially suspicious EIP-7702 delegation linked to an address funded through Tornado Cash shortly before the transfers. The circumstances remain unclear and the link is not confirmed (Crypto Briefing (external)).

What Binance and CZ said

  • Binance, on X, as quoted by CoinDesk and Crypto Briefing: "Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating. At this stage, we have not confirmed any impact to user funds."
  • CZ, in a post on X, as reported by Crypto Briefing (external): "User funds are safe!" and "It does look like a hack on Binance." He said Tether and Circle had frozen about $971 million in USDT and $823 million in USDC, and that as a shareholder he expects all customer funds to be covered.
  • Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino later said Tether had frozen over $1.57B of USDT (CoinDesk (external)).
  • Freezes in the main receiving wallet. Decrypt reports Tether froze 975.1 million USDT there, and Circle froze 823 million USDC there at 5:04 PM ET, about $1.8 billion in total (Decrypt (external)).
  • Binance withdrawals. Several Binance users reported difficulties withdrawing funds (Crypto Briefing (external)).

Binance itself has not confirmed a loss amount or a cause as of this update.

Market reaction

What traders can do right now

  • Follow official channels only. Expect scams: fake "refund" or "claim" links show up fast after any exchange incident.
  • Don't connect your wallet to "compensation" sites. Wallet drainer pages copy exchange branding. No legitimate refund needs your seed phrase or a blanket token approval.
  • Review your token approvals on the wallets you trade from, and revoke ones you no longer use.
  • Check meme coins before you buy. Volatility spikes during news like this. Run any Solana token through our free meme coin scanner to see mint and freeze authority, holder concentration, launch-block buys and creator selling.

What we'll watch

  • A formal statement from Binance on cause, scope and user impact.
  • Follow-up tracing from on-chain analysts on where the funds landed.
  • Whether the alleged Tornado Cash link is confirmed or ruled out.
